Hellebores are my favorite plant here on Bowen Island. Deer resistant and hardy in our rainy province, they surprise me every year as their beautiful heads start to appear from the soil.
Winter is not kind to these beautiful perennials and they look very sad after the frost decides to take a break. In late February I cut all the leaves off – exposing just the beautiful flowers. As the new leaves grow in they help protect the plant from the hot sun – definitely a win win situation for both of us!
